Flex has been committed to protecting and promoting a healthy world for a long time. Sustainability, in many forms, has been a major part of our mission since the very beginning of our company. In establishing a culture of integrity, we’re not only upholding our basic responsibilities to the planet and its inhabitants, but also setting the stage for long-term success, for Flex, our customers and our employees. Now, our commitments have been recognized in the biggest way possible, Flex has been accepted as a participant in the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative.
Under the UNGC, companies pledge to do business responsibly by voluntarily following 10 principles in areas of human rights, labor, the environment and anti-corruption, and sustainable business practices. The UNGC has more than 9,500 participants in over 160 countries. Many of these principles align with our public commitment to reaching 20 sustainable business goals by 2020. For instance, we leverage the magnitude of our supply chain to make a positive impact in our industry by providing on-site social and environmental training that aligns with Responsible Business Alliance requirements and addresses labor practice issues. With acceptance into this initiative, Flex is a company and partner our customers can rely on when it comes to affirming that what we provide to our customers promotes their own sustainability goals.
Our goals involve the environment, the people who work with us and the communities where we have facilities. We’re committed to increasing the use of renewable energy and we produce more solar panels and trackers ourselves every year. We’re using less water in our manufacturing processes and recycling more of the water we do use. We’re working to reduce our CO2 emissions and increase our waste diversion rate. We’re devoted to promoting a zero-injury culture, to increase the amount of training we provide every year, and to respecting the human rights of all people throughout our organizations and our value chain. We partner with nonprofits to help them extend more technical and vocational training to our communities, and we make it possible for our employees to be active, effective volunteers. Our 20 by 2020 goals are not only important to us, but contribute and align to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.
