A global commitment: recognizing our sustainability initiatives

As part of our Sustainability Strategy, we continually strive to improve our sustainability performance globally. Innovation and integrity form the foundation for these strategies, which manifest in programs, practices, and actions that create positive impacts on the communities where we operate, the people we serve in those communities, and the environment at large. We weave these areas into our day to day operations, not only because it is good for business but also because it is the right thing to do.

External Recognition for our Sustainability Efforts

We are honored that Frost and Sullivan recognized our sustainability efforts with its 2018 Manufacturing Leadership Award for Sustainability for the results we obtained during last year’s Earth Day Challenge. Ethical Corp also shortlisted us for the 2017 Responsible Business Awards under the Employee Engagement Category.

Internal recognition for our sustainability programs

Internally, we champion our sustainability efforts through an annual program that recognizes the best sustainability initiatives in each region. Now in its second year, the program awards winners a monetary prize to help fund more sustainability projects, thus increasing our positive impact.

This year’s selection of winners was very competitive. Many remarkable projects participated, including

  • a new school construction in Laos which will benefit more than 3,000 students each year
  • a health and safety training in Malaysia
  • a book donation project for children in Brazil
  • an engineering and technology Standards definition in Polish education

These projects translate into direct positive benefits for our employees, the environment and the communities, where we operate.

Sustainability drives impact for employees, communities and the environment

The Higher Education Access to Employees, a project implemented by our Juarez Sites in Mexico, won the Americas prize this year. Through this project, we became the first company in that city to offer employees the opportunity to obtain a higher education degree. We collaborated on this project with the UACJ, the local state university. The program currently benefits dozen of students who are pursuing a degree in Mechatronic Engineering. It is aligned to the UN SDG #4 Quality Education, in specific to its indicator 4.3.1 participation rate of youth and adults in formal and non-formal education and training. Yielding positive economic and social impacts, this higher education initiative will provide those involved with better work opportunities, which translates into a better quality of life for their families and, through the cumulative effect of all participants, to society.

An innovative environmental solution project from Sárvár Ikervári, Hungary won in the EMEA region. This team developed a solution that created a collapsible, reusable plastic box produced from recycled operational scrap. This project recycled over 240 tons of plastic, reduced the volume of return trips by 75%, and created additional monetary savings through reduced carton costs.  This initiative replaced more than 600,000 one-time use cardboard cartons with these durable, reusable containers which are now in the shipping system route between the Sárvár Ikervári and Muckachevo, Ukraine site.

The innovative and resourceful project aligned with the UN SDG # 12 Responsible Consumption and Production, and contributed to indicator 12.5.1 National recycling rate, tons of material recycled.

Our Skudai, Malaysia site claimed the top prize in Asia with its program focused on reducing wasted energy in Senai. This team implemented several actions including identifying the equipment responsible for the highest energy consumption, reducing compressed air leakage, introducing a time control for the air-conditioning system, and increasing energy conservation awareness at the site. This project was aligned to SDG #9 Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, particularly to indicator 9.4.1 CO2 emission per unit of value added that converges with one of the Flex 20 by 2020 goals, namely reducing CO2 emissions by at least 10 percent normalized to revenue (Base year 2016).

We congratulate this year’s winners and encourage all employees to continue their contributions to a more sustainable world. We look forward to next year’s initiatives. Every effort counts!
