New processors consumed more power, but innovation proceeded at an orderly pace defined by Moore\u2019s Law \u2014 a pace easily accommodated by commensurate progress in power distribution and efficiency. Facility design philosophy remained remarkably consistent, with the electrical and IT rooms separated both physically and as separate domains, and engineers working within their own spheres to improve equipment as technology advanced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI workloads have upended that approach in dramatic fashion. The arrival of power-hungry GPU clusters, 1+ MW racks, and spiky training and inference cycles has put the industry on notice. It is a system-level challenge.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Facility and rack power have long been treated as separate engineering domains. One team designed substations, switchgear, uninterrupted power systems (UPS), and distribution equipment. Another designed rack power configurations, server supplies, and voltage regulation solutions. Our own business has traditionally mirrored this division, with separate focus areas for <a href=\"https:\/\/flex.com\/products\/power-and-cooling#critical-power\">critical power<\/a> (grid to facility) and <a href=\"https:\/\/flex.com\/products\/power-and-cooling#embedded-power\">embedded power<\/a> (rack-level solutions). While these categories help simplify a complex market, they can also obscure the reality that power delivery is end to end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nonetheless, most companies in this sector are either critical power or embedded power specialists, which requires data center operators to coordinate the two and make sure there are no hiccups once grid power enters the facility. That was manageable when incremental changes ruled the day and neither domain was particularly stressed. But today\u2019s GPU platforms consume nearly 20 times the power that CPUs did just a few years ago. Decisions made at the chip and rack level affect facility layout, cooling systems, power quality, energy requirements, and more, reverberating throughout the electrical infrastructure. Instead of treating grid infrastructure, electrical distribution, and rack-level embedded power as separate optimization problems, engineers need to evaluate the entire energy distribution path as a collaborative, multidisciplinary team. Boundaries are less meaningful than the performance of the system in its entirety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#2: Higher-voltage power isn\u2019t a trend. It\u2019s a physical imperative.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traditional 48\u201354 VDC architectures are reaching their practical limits as gigawatt-scale AI factories scale toward the adoption of 1+ MW racks. This has operators exploring <a href=\"https:\/\/flex.com\/downloads\/800-vdc-power-rack-solution-brief\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">800 VDC architectures<\/a> to solve problems that are difficult and expensive to address at extreme power densities. They are not inherently \u201cbetter,\u201d but they deliver distinct benefits suited to GPU-centric environments, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Higher power with dramatically lower current, which leads to smaller conductors and busbars, lighter cabling, easier routing, and lower connector requirements<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fewer power conversion stages from the grid through point-of-load converters, resulting in better reliability with less equipment and maintenance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lower distribution losses throughout the power network, which increases electrical efficiency, reduces energy waste, and decreases cooling requirements<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Less copper consumption, a significant cost savings when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tomshardware.com\/tech-industry\/ai-data-center-buildout-pushes-copper-toward-shortages-analysts-warn?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">every megawatt<\/a> of installed data center capacity requires 27\u201333 metric tons of copper and a predicted shortfall of the metal threatens operators and utilities alike<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Better use of space in the data center since higher-voltage energy distribution decreases shelf size, cable congestion, electrical room footprint, and rack overhead<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div id=\"id_6a7d83cc5656d\" class=\"media block\">\n\t<div class=\"container media-right content-top\">\n\t\t<div class=\"media\" style=\"left: 0px;
