5G will change our lives with new applications like AR/VR, autonomous cars and 4K/8K video on the go — all of which require significant bandwidth and up to 10-20 times more spectrum than what’s available today. Such large blocks of spectrum are not available in the low and mid bands below 6 GHz. To get the capacity needed, manufacturers and wireless providers are moving up in frequency to millimeter wave (mmWave) spectrum, which is loosely defined as frequencies between 24 GHz and 300 GHz.
mmWaves represent a new frontier for commercial and consumer-facing mobile wireless applications. We developed a mmWave phased array demonstrator to help you bring 5G to your products, faster. Overcoming the limitations of mmWaves
mmWave spectrum comes with unique challenges. Until now, the equipment needed to use this spectrum was not commercially available for mobile applications, and no mmWave spectrum had been auctioned or allocated for 5G. In addition, millimeter waves have a very limited reach of just a few hundred meters due to high free-space propagation losses, obstruction from buildings and trees, and absorption by humidity, foliage or rain.
Recent advancements in phased array antennas can overcome the challenges of mmWave spectrum. The phased array boosts the range of mmWaves by focusing signals into narrow beams, increasing the effective isotropic radiated power (EIRP) and overcoming path loss. The ability to steer the beam in two dimensions means the RF energy can be directed exactly where it’s needed, like a spotlight in a theater focused on the lead actor.

Operating at 28 GHz, our mmWave phased array demonstrator features two cross-polarized, electronically steerable, 16-element phased arrays. We also developed software that controls the beams during testing.
