Today at Flex, we celebrate the first day of Hispanic Heritage Month, marking the beginning of numerous inclusion and diversity moments we will observe in the weeks and months ahead.
Now in my second month as Flex’s global head of inclusion and diversity, I’m still grasping what it means to be part of a team that is 160,000+ strong spread across 30 countries. Apart from our differences in nationality, race, gender identity, sexual orientation, culture, religion and language, we also each bring our unique sensibilities and talents to inform our work and interactions. This complex tapestry of diversity is one reason we have been able to thrive and succeed in our many geographic markets around the world.
Hispanic Heritage Month is observed in the U.S. between September 15 and October 15 to honor the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestry can be traced to Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. Importantly, September 15 marks the anniversaries of independence of five Latin American countries including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Mexico, Chile and Belize celebrate their respective independence on September 16th, 18th and 21st. It is perhaps fitting too that we are paying tribute to the moment in their histories that aspired to equality and progress.
Over the next 30 days, we will celebrate our colleagues of Latinx and Hispanic heritage not only in the U.S. but globally given our wide-reaching presence. As we are deeply enriched by their presence, perspectives and contributions, we will engage and educate our teams about the diverse range of Latinx and Hispanic intersectional cultures and histories through various campaigns and events. We will also share their extraordinary stories with you throughout the coming weeks.
Leading with inclusion
As we look forward to planning for 2021 and beyond, we will lead with inclusion and commit to creating a workplace where everyone is seen, heard and valued. We will undertake a variety of initiatives to further build this culture of understanding and belonging, including team engagement events and launching resource groups to empower employees to connect on shared interests, support each other and advocate for change.
Hearing from voices around the globe through our inclusion council and partnering with our leaders around the company, we aim to improve employee experiences and outcomes.
With these initiatives as a starting point, we hope to create a culture of authentic inclusion where each of us are made to feel we are an integral part of the Flex family, and by extension, society.
At the end of the day, “we are a company of people,” our CEO Revathi Advaithi recently reminded us. On that note, we highlight Hispanic Heritage Month to recognize those across our broader communities whose forebearers hail from Latin America and Spain. We see you, we hear you and we appreciate you.
Watch this space as we bring you inspirational stories about our amazing Latinx and Hispanic team members!
