The Growth of LPWAN
Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN) enable us to embed connectivity into everyday objects, transforming cities into smart cities and workplaces into connected environments. Two of the most widely deployed are LoRa and Sigfox, which are changing the “smartphone IoT hub” paradigm that allows IoT devices to connect to the Internet only when a smartphone is nearby.
LPWAN solutions are growing at an astounding rate. In 2017, the LoRa Alliance reported a 176% increase in certified product growth from 2016.2 That growth is projected to continue, as industry analyst firm IDATE projects that LPWAN units shipped will grow from 109 million in 2017 to 339 million in 2025.2

These technologies have significantly changed the Wide Area Network (WAN) connectivity landscape for IoT devices. As they provide IoT devices with low data rates and long-range communication capabilities, they also maintain very low power consumption and a low cost for the silicon transceiver.
Asset tracking and geolocation services are the main sectors that will benefit from LPWAN technologies, but other verticals including smart buildings, smart cities, agriculture and farming are finding solutions to their own connectivity problems. Many IoT applications require geolocation, and LPWAN technologies provide an additional benefit of location information at different levels of accuracy without using additional sensing elements.
