New data center builds continue, but there are challenges. Land is a key consideration, especially given the parameters that govern preferred data center locations \u2014 access to reliable power, sufficient broadband infrastructure, water for cooling, proximity to end users, and applicable zoning and permitting. Taken together, these factors are driving innovation as data center operators rethink how vast interior spaces are configured. The real estate adage \u201clocation, location, location\u201d is as much about what\u2019s inside the building as where it\u2019s sited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\" id=\"h-beyond-compute-capacity-power-and-cooling-as-determining-factors\" style=\"font-weight:600\">Beyond compute capacity: power and cooling as determining factors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether standing up new data centers or retrofitting existing ones, more compute in less space (higher density) is the goal. But is that feasible given the inordinate amount of energy required to power modern data centers?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Traditionally, the ratio of grey space to white space in the data center has been approximately 1:1, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/ww3.rics.org\/uk\/en\/journals\/construction-journal\/data-centre-demand-retrofit.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">RICS Construction Journal<\/a>. This means that for every square foot devoted to electrical and cooling equipment \u2014 the grey space occupied by switchgear, uninterrupted power source (UPS) transformers, computer room air conditioning (CRAC) units, chillers, etc. \u2014 there\u2019s a square foot of white space reserved for IT equipment such as servers, storage, and networking devices. Hyperscale data centers often target closer to a 1:3 ratio, with more floor space given to <a href=\"\/industries\/cloud#compute-storage\">compute<\/a>. The precise proportion is influenced by a number of operational factors, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Power density<\/strong> \u2014 Power consumption starts at the chip. Central processing units (CPUs), handle a wide variety of computing tasks and operate at 150W\u2013300W. Accelerators such as graphics processing units (GPUs) designed for the massive parallelism widely used in AI require 10 times the power of CPUs, operating at up to 1,500W and increasing. Data centers that consume more power per square foot typically need more floorspace for electrical and cooling infrastructure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cooling technology<\/strong> \u2014 As compute density ramps up, data centers heat up. Just a few years ago, typical server racks were designed to deal with 10kW of energy. Now, most can handle 40kW\u201360kW, and hyperscalers are <a href=\"https:\/\/cloud.google.com\/blog\/topics\/systems\/enabling-1-mw-it-racks-and-liquid-cooling-at-ocp-emea-summit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">preparing for 1+ MW.<\/a> At that level of performance, will generate 20 times more heat than previous. As demand grows, making power accessible and usable across the data center is no longer optional \u2014 it\u2019s mission-critical. Once considered a check-the-box utility, power has become a strategic focus, with operators scrutinizing every layer of infrastructure from grid to chip. Consider the scenario showcased in Figure 1 and Figure 2. In a typical data center configuration today, the air-cooled electrical room might supply power to a lineup of traditional 50kW racks in the data hall via a 1,200-amp busway, with the data hall taking up about 160 sq. ft. of space [Figure 1]. Power, cooling, and servers are fully integrated within the same rack. With 1+ MW racks on the horizon, however, change is in order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shifting the power architecture and bringing in <a href=\"https:\/\/jetcool.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">advanced liquid cooling technologies<\/a> eases space constraints while imparting a host of other benefits. For instance, a higher capacity 4,000-amp busbar feeding power into a reconfigured data hall with an end-of-row cooling distribution unit (CDU) can accommodate high-density IT racks and elevate the power architecture to 400V [Figure 2]. Now we\u2019re seeing them emerge in the data center. Traditionally, converting incoming AC power to a DC voltage usable at the chip level requires several steps. Every conversion means a loss of efficiency, so the number of \u201chandoffs\u201d matters. Condensing power conversion into a single solid state transformer reduces that loss considerably [Figure 3].
