Integrating sophisticated functionalities into the miniaturized system of a drug delivery device poses a unique challenge – to which flexible hybrid systems present the only viable, cost-effective solution. Hybrid systems combine traditional silicon integrated circuits with functional smart substrates, such as flexible batteries, sensors, interconnects, antennae and displays.
While still in their early days, these systems ultimately target deployment across industries, including logistics, medical devices, consumer electronics and industrial sensing. Deployment is predicted in mass volumes at an estimated hundreds of millions to billions per year, and usually at ultra-low target prices in the tens of cents.
The design and development of these tiny yet complex devices pose tight constraints in system design, process development, materials selection and assembly equipment design.
